Brick Chimney Alternatives

This property was having a lot of issues with water getting into the chimney & running down to the basement and even rotting out the metal vent pipes from two water heaters & 2 furnaces. It also has a sharp 45% angle in the attic which was getting a build up of condensation from the carbon monoxide. Replacing the chimney with a new brick chimney isn’t really an option. We needed to come up with a easy, safe &┬ácost effective way to vent the water heaters & furnaces. What we ended up doing was installing 7″ B vent from the basement, cutting holes in the first floor, between the first & second floor, into the attic and out of the top of the roof. We ran the new vent along the existing chimney, boxed it on both living areas & sealed it from the outside and anchored it to the old brick chimney. The cost on something like this is in the $3500-$4500 range depending on what obstacles are in the way of the new vent. The other option was to replace both water heaters & both furnaces with high efficiency and vent them out of the side of the basement. The costs on that would of been well over $10,000.
